WMBD/WYZZ TV - PEORIA -- Instead of sleeping in on a Saturday morning, 1,500 volunteers woke up early to clean up the city of Peoria.
At eight in the morning, hundreds of bright-eyed volunteers set out to clean up their communities for the 11th Annual Keep Peoria Beautiful, which is part of the Great American Clean Up. Last year volunteers say they collected more than 83, 000 pounds of litter. Volunteers say it's all about keeping Mother Earth clean one yard at a time.
Cody Uhlman says he started cleaning at six in the morning, "I think it's very important because if you can't keep a yard clean, how are you supposed to keep an environment clean."
Volunteers included school children, church groups and scout troops. Mayor Jim Ardis and Peoria City Council members were also out and about collecting litter.
