WMBD/WYZZ TV – PEORIA
– In tonight’s "We Hear You," we respond to the call of an elderly
woman in need. Tracy Campbell's friend
wrote in to us to let us know of a dangerous problem. One of the steps leading to her front door
has deteriorated... And she hopes her
landlord will take action for her.
Tracy Campbell is a good tenant: "I consider myself
one: I don't have wild parties!"
But she's hoping her landlord will step it up... And take care of a
problem that's been developing for months.
The bottom step leading up to her front door has deteriorated. To make matters worse, Tracy
has issues getting around: "both hips replaced, and both knees."
When Tracy’s
friend, Audrey, saw how bad the step had gotten, she wrote in to “We Hear You”
-- hoping someone would take action for this senior citizen. "It needs to be repaired as soon as
possible," says Audrey Samuels.
The City Inspector says it's the landlord's responsibility
to fix the concrete. A complaint was
filed in January, but so far nothings been done. It's gotten so bad some days Tracy’s
mailman won't deliver because of it.
Tracy worries
she could fall and end up in a nursing home because of the step.
We contacted Tracy’s
landlord, Mildred Ames. She declined to
comment on camera, but tells us the concrete crumbled because Tracy
used sidewalk salt on it during the winter.
Tracy says it's been
crumbling since last summer. City Inspectors
tell us the landlord has until April 14th to fix the step before fines kick in. We'll keep you posted on future developments.
