WMBD/WYZZ - Peoria - Bernie Madoff pled guilty Thursday in connection to one of the biggest Ponzi schemes ever and if you’re looking to invest yourself, the Better Business Bureau of central Illinois has some tips to avoid being scammed. When choosing an investment option, the Better Business Bureau offers reliability reports for local companies. The bureau also warns about giving out unsolicited personal information, especially over the phone. Basically, the bureau warns you should know beforehand what you are investing in. “Anything that sounds too good to be true, it is,” says Jessica Tharp, director of operations for the Better Business Bureau. “This is not the time to be really risky with your money. You need to really do the homework first.” Many people who are involved in scams never get their money back. For more information on local investment options, you can contact the Better Business Bureau of central Illinois.
