Poll: Most Americans Dissatisfied with Direction of U.S.

Updated: February 18, 2013

A new Gallup poll released Monday indicates 72 percent of those polled are dissatisfied with
the way things are going in the country and 27 percent of Americans are satisfied.
U S satisfaction has not been above 30 percent on a sustained basis since the first half of 2007,
according to Gallup. However, most striking about the poll is that the partisan divide remains
wide. 47 percent of Democrats are satisfied with the direction of the country and growing while
only 9 percent of Republicans are satisfied. The polling firm notes the improvement in satisfaction
since December is the result of increased optimism among Democrats with no increase
in satisfaction among independents or Republicans. Gallup says this type of partisan gap between
voters of two major political parties could permanently suppress overall satisfaction if it persists.
