TAZEWELL COUNTY- A crash Wednesday morning left one man dead and another in the hospital.
The Tazewell County Coroner said 19-year-old Matthew Schweigert was killed after he apparently pulled out into the path of a cargo van. The van was headed east bound on Route 9. Schweigert was driving along Springfield road.
The accident happened in Tazewell County where those two intersect, just outside of Tremont, around 7:15 a.m. The driver of the van was taken to Pekin hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
There is a stop sign at the intersection, but only on Springfield road. Some people say more could be done to make it safer.
"I don't know if it's necessary to put in a four-way stop there," said Dale Koch.
Others say that's a long shot.
"I don't know, they won't put a stop sign in the middle of the state route, that wont happen," said Joe Venenovich.
That intersection was widened within the last few years to make it safer. People say that helped, but still have suggestions.
"I don't know how they can do any more unless they do flashing lights," Venenovich said.
"Unless they went to a light, stoplight," said Karen Sassman.
Others say it might not be a problem with the intersection, just more cars on the road.
"Maybe they should slow down the speed limit because there are a lot of businesses on rout nine and eventually it's going to be all businesses from Tremont to Pekin," said Meg Koch.
The Tazewell County Sheriffs Department is still investigating the crash, officers say they're not sure if any citations will be issued. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday morning.
A Tazewell County Sheriff's Department car was also involved in an accident while responding to the crash. The department said the officer tried to pass a car, when another car pulled out in front of him. The officer lost control of his car and rolled over into a ditch.
