PEORIA-- Peoria City Council Member Gary Sandberg's decision to run for the First District Race is causing controversy with his opponents.

Gary Sandberg is a longtime "at-large" councilman and is making a run at the First District seat in February.

His decision to run is causing controversy between his opponents Denise Moore and Randall Emert. They both filed an objection with the election commission claiming that since Sandberg doesn't live in the district he shouldn't be allowed to run.

According to the Election Commission's rules, a candidate must live in the district in which he is running for 12 months.

Officials say Sandberg listed his residency on the application at a building in the 1200 block of South West Adams Street.

Denise Moore sent a release quoting " I have strong reason to believe that Mr. Sandberg presented the Election Commission with false information regarding his residency.

WMBD 31 tried contacting Sandberg on the issue but he had no comment.
