PEORIA- Thousands of Indians celebrated their own day of thanks on Tuesday, it was the Hindu holiday Diwali.

The holiday started with a Hindu lord defeating evil, the story says the people lit thousands of small candles called diyas to celebrate.

Tuesday Indians visited the Hindu temple and then had festivities at home. Rathna Kumari Kambham was at the Hindu temple in Peoria and said they traditionally get together with family and friends, make a lot of food and light off fireworks. She says celebrating in the U.S.A. you have to do things a little differently, like take off work.

"The fireworks, they don't do much here, but they put all the diyas, some small fireworks, they do it with all the kids and the families. It's a fun day," Kambham said.
