Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and Ilinois State Police announced Tuesday a plan to heighten enforcement efforts leading up to the Memorial Day weekend. Hundreds more safety belt enforcement zones and other patrols are planned for the heavily traveled holiday weekend. Meantime, Peoria County Sheriff's department also announced it is continuing its Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program or STEP by participating in an increased enforcement effort as well this Memorial Day holiday. Now through May 28th the sheriff's office will intensify enforcement of safety belt usage. The purpose of STEP is to lower the incidence of motor vehicle crashes through increased highly visible enforcement of safety belt use and impaired driving during national and state enforcement campaigns.
