PEKIN- Tazewell County residents will find a slight mistake on their tax
bills this year...This year's Tazewell County tax extension for
Illinois Central College includes a mistake. According to the county,
the rate applied was not the actual rate, creating a deficiency of about
two million dollars. Taxpayers can expect to see an adjustment to their
tax extension next year. To cover the deficiency this year, the county
will loan ICC the amount of the deficit. Once next year's tax receipts
are received, both ICC and Tazewell County will be made whole. The
deficit amounts to about $50 for a property owner of a $100,000 home.
The county says if it reissued the tax bills, the postage alone would be
more than $25,000. Tazewell County Administrator Michael Freilinger
says the situation will lead to a closer look at the county's processes
to make sure this doesn't happen again.
