PEORIA-U.S. Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois is speaking out to keep student loan interest rates low in central Illinois.
Durbin made a stop in Peoria today.
He says rates on new student loans could double if Congress doesn't take action.
It's something Durbin says shouldn't be a partisan issue.
"We have got to try and reconcile what I see as a mushrooming debt to students and their families, that in some cases they can no possible repay. That is the reality of what we face. The first thing we need to do is make sure this interest rate doesn't double," says Senator Durbin.
Republicans say they want the interest rates to stay low but Congress has to take action by July first to keep interest rates from going up.
