NORMAL - Some adorable newborn ducklings had a close call Monday morning.
10 baby ducks hatched in the courtyard at Sugar Creek Special Care Center in Normal. But 5 of them fell into a storm drain! Their mom - Mrs. Quackers - stayed by the drain until staff members noticed. Then a worker crawled into the drain and pulled the newborns to safety.
"She was a little irritated that we were out there with the other babies but after we got one out, she kind of left us alone and we'd bring the ducks over to her and I think she was happy," said Sugar Creek employee and duck rescuer Crystal Biddle.
Staff members aren't sure why Mrs. Quackers chose to have her ducks in their courtyard. But the facility serves patients with Alzheimer's Disease, and workers say the ducks might be able to help trigger memories for some of its residents.
