Members of Peoria's South-West Kiwanis Club are taking action to beautify the River City.

In honor of Arbor Day, the group planted a gingko tree at Luthy Botanical Garden.

Members started the planting ceremony twenty six years ago, placing trees near city parks and schools.

They say the tradition is rooted in helping children appreciate nature by playing in it.

"If you haven't climbed a tree when you're a kid you should have," said South-West Kiwanis Club President Conley Stutz.  "So trees and serving the children of the world seem to go hand in hand and starting a new tree is like starting a new family."

The tree celebration also helped Luthy Botanical Garden kick off its spring plant sale.

It began today and lasts through Sunday.
