POLL- A new Fox News poll out Thursday night shows Republican and former
Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney with a slight edge over President
Barack Obama while the president's approval rating hits a new low for
the year. Romney in a head to head matchup beats Obama 46 to 44. More
Republicans than Democrats or Independents say they are extremely
interested in the upcoming presidential election. Among the highly
sought independents, 43 percent prefer Romney and 37 percent Obama.
Nearly one in four independents, according to the poll, are undecided or
won't vote. Women are more likely to vote for Obama while men
overwhelmingly go for Romney. Obama's job approval rating stands at a
yearly low of 42 percent. The drop comes mainly from Democrats. More
voters think Obama's policies have hurt (37) rather than helped the
economy (31). Maybe more dire for President Obama, most Americans in the
poll (67percent) are unhappy with the direction of the country. By a 7
point margin more voters think Romney has the best experience to fix the
economy. and Romney's advantage widens 41 to 28 among independents. By a
9 point margin, voters are more likely to say Obama is smarter.
However, among voters who say the economy is extremely important, Romney
has a 55 to 37 percent advantage over Obama.
