NORMAL-- Fourteen new parking spaces can now be found uptown, but they're not meant for cars.
The slots are for cyclists.
Crews installed the town's first on-street bike rack Wednesday.
It's meant to keep more traffic off the sidewalks and give people extra space to park their bikes.
Town planner Mercy Davison says the close proximity of the constitution trail makes uptown a popular area for cyclists.
She hopes the new rack encourages more people to leave their cars at home and choose a greener form of transportation.
"It's just nice to have a new type of bike rack in the community," said Davison. "(It) makes bike parking a little more visible and convenient for people. We already have a demand, so it's nice to meet it."
"Fix-it" stations are also coming to Uptown Normal.
They'll include tools to adjust bike seats and pumps to fill tires.
