WMBD/WYZZ-TV - MIDLAND, MICH.
The Peoria Chiefs rode strong pitching and a triple play for a doubleheader sweep at Great Lakes Thursday night. The triple play ended game two, 6-1 after Peoria won the opener, 2-1.
With the Chiefs leading 6-1 in the seventh inning of the nightcap, reliever Jayson Ruhlman walked the first two batters. But Great Lakes Carlos Santana followed with a grounder to third baseman Josh Lansford. Lansford fielded the ball, stepped on third for the first out, threw to secondbaseman Matt Camp for the second out, and Camp relayed to firstbaseman DJ Lewis to complete the fourth triple play in franchise history. Rafael Dolis (2-1) allowed one run in five innings to get the win.
Peoria (7-5) won the opener with a run in the seventh. DJ Lewis followed Alfred Josephs leadoff triple with a sacrifice fly to deep right. Reliever Alex Maestri (1-0) picked up the win after starter Jose Pina pitched into the fifth inning allowing just one run.
The Chiefs have won four straight and will finish their series at Great Lakes Friday night.
