Reported by: Kurt Pegler - WMBD/WYZZ-TV Thursday, Nov 5, 2009 @09:52pm CST WMBD/WYZZ-TV - PEORIA, Ill. -- A sprained ankle might keep Michael Schrader on the sidelines at the state soccer tournament this weekend.
It's about the only thing that can stop the senior forward. He's involved in Spanish, chess and ping pong clubs. He's a student ambassador and has been a part of Notre Dame's student government for three years. "I like student government because you're involved in school and the students and faculty," said Schrader. "Any input I can have helps benefit the school. That's why I like it." Schrader suffered the ankle injury in ND's 3-0 super-sectional win over Lemont Tuesday night. Irish coach Mike Bare says Schrader will be a game time decision Friday. He also says his captain is a guy that is worthy of having around even if he can't play this weekend. "He's a hard-worker, he's a leader, a senior captaIn," said Bare. "He's one of those kids that you're proud to have him as part of your program." On the field, Schrader is a vital part of Notre Dame's defending state champion soccer team. In school, he's the president of the senior class. "I'm in charge, after we graduate, for the class reunions," chuckled Schrader. Another thing that makes Schrader chuckle is the reaction he gets when he scores a goal. He jumps in the air, kicks his leg and give a fist pump. "One day after I scored a goal, it kinda came to me naturally," said Schrader, who would like to study pre-med in college. "It's a fun thing. I get made fun of. But it's all in good fun." Nobody will be making fun of Schrader if he has a few final fist pumps in him this weekend. |
