Reported by: Iris Pérez - WMBD/WYZZ Wednesday, Nov 4, 2009 @04:53pm CST PEORIA - Peoria's men and women in blue are looking to restructure
after City Council members vote to cut 33 jobs at the Police Department.
The cuts are an effort to reduce the city's 2010 budget deficit, which has been whittled down to $642,000. It was originally $14.5 million. Peoria Police Benevolent Representatives say compared to other City departments, cuts to the force seem unfair. Seventy six total city positions are being marked for elimination. "When they went around interviewed the public, talking about the budget for next year, the number one concern was police, but yet we've been taken 3 times the hit of anyone else," said Police Union President, Troy Skaggs. The department has no current plans in place to restructure. A final vote on the budget by the City Council is expected before the end of the year. |
