Reported by: Kurt Pegler - WMBD/WYZZ-TV Wednesday, Oct 14, 2009 @11:49pm CDT WMBD/WYZZ-TV - PEORIA, Ill. -- Mike Davis says the secret to Richwoods' success on the football field is easy.
"We have some really-talented players, probably the most talent Richwoods has had in awhile," said Davis. Chief among those talented players is Davis, the Knight's senior quarterback, who has spiced up the typically predictable Richwoods offense. With running and passing. "I used to play running back so I just carried my talents from running back to quarterback," said Davis. "My cuts are better, most quarterbacks don't cut like they should." Richwoods (6-1) has run the "belly option" for years. Fullbacks running between the tackles are common place in the Knights offense. But now Davis is adding flavor to the offensive scheme. Earlier this month he rushed for five touchdowns against Peoria Central. In one half. "We're used to it by now." said tight end Nate Greenwood. of Davis' heroics. "It's seven weeks into the season and we're used to it but it's great. He can really move." Added head coach Roland Brown: "He is fun to watch. You watch him and sometimes I have to calm him down and tell him to just run the ball Sometimes, not so many moves here and there. But he has alot of different moves that we had nothing to do with -- as far as teaching." One area where Davis did need teaching was in throwing the football. "I used to throw sidearm when I was younger but between my sophomore and junior years I started throwing overhead," admitted Davis. "At first it wasn't pretty." But now it's a thing of beauty for Richwoods, which hosts Peoria Woodruff Friday night. |
