Reported by: Iris Pérez - WMBD/WYZZ Tuesday, Sep 22, 2009 @05:14pm CDT PEORIA - Senators from across Illinois are in Peoria to discuss ending statewide gerrymandering.
The Illinois State Senate Redistricting Committee is looking to eliminate the current lottery drawing used to assign legislative district borders, and end the use of partisan information to assign districts. Some legislators say Illinois' practices are some of the worst cases of gerrymandering in the country. "When you have a member of congress that lives in Moline and the District snakes all the way down the Mississippi River, comes over on one road in Springfield, goes to the heart of Decatur you have to ask yourself whether that's good government," said, Illinois Reform Commission, Brad McMillan. The Redistricting Committee will present it's next proposal next month in Carbondale. If the proposal makes it to the ballot and voters approve, District Boundary Changes could be made following the 2010 census. |
