  • Brewer Brews Up Storm for BU
Reported by: Kurt Pegler - WMBD/WYZZ-TV

WMBD/WYZZ-TV - PEORIA -- Dan Brewer is a mover and a shaker. He's moved all over Bradley's lineup and he shakes up opponents in the process.

The Bradley junior has been moved to three positions in three years. And he's excelled at all second base, shortstop and in the outfield earning all conference honors in the Missouri Valley all three seasons.

He's moved all over the Bradley batting order, as well. He's hitting third this season after hitting lead off last year.

"Leading off was a struggle for me last year at first," confessed Brewer. "But once I got comfortable in that position, it was good for our team."

Added Bradley coach Dewey Kalmer, "Last year when I inserted him in the lead off position we won 14 of 15. What was I thinking?"

Now the question is what are opponents thinking? Brewer enters this week's State Farm MVC Tournament batting .356 with 15 doubles, six homers, 36 runs batted in and 18 stolen bases.

"I started off slowly," said Brewer of his big season. "I tried to relax and stay calm. And it doesn't hurt having Colby (Lutrell) hitting behind me."

Luttrell and Brewer have been great in the middle of the Bradley lineup. While Brewer leads the team in runs (49), slugging percentage (.576) and on-base percentage (.450), Lutrell enjoyed a breakthrough season hitting .366.

And now Brewer's big season has caught the eyes of baseball scouts. Kalmer expects his biggest offensive weapon to be picked in next month's baseball amateur draft.

"Danny's our best power guy, our best base stealer and he's on base more than anybody," said Kalmer. "He's a unique individual. If you can hit, you can play."

Brewer is looking forward to the draft on June 5. But right now he's looking forward to the Valley Tournament.

"(The draft) is hard to ignore. But it's something I have to forget for now," said Brewer. "I think (the distraction) hurt me at the beginning of the year but the more I kind of let it go, the better I played."

And right now he's playing as well as anybody in the conference.
