WMBD/WYZZ - Peoria - President Obama is calling for a national day of service in remembrance of the 9/11 attacks, and one local group is stepping up to the plate to help.

The Mayor's Litter Committee recycled tires Friday afternoon as part of the National Green the Block initiative.

The Green the Block initiative is also a means of educating low-income and urban communities about the importance of going green.

"It's not just about picking up the litter," says Vin Glover, chairman for the Mayor's Litter Committee. "It's about behaviors and changing behaviors. Education first, then practice."

The event was open to all Peoria residents. The Mayor's Litter Committee plans on sponsoring more events as the year progresses.
