WMBD/WYZZ TV – EAST PEORIA -- Last year 187 officers were killed in the
line of duty. Central Illinois honors the local men and women who made the
ultimate sacrifice. In East Peoria, taps play as a reminder of the men and women who kept
our neighborhoods safe, but didn't come home. East Peoria’s Police Chief says, “So often we take our officers in
harms way for granted, this is a visual reminder." In Peoria, a convoy of red, white, and blue makes its way to city hall.
Names of fallen officers are read off, and a single rose marks each of their
lives. Barbara Salyars lays one in honor of her daughter Cristy Tindall. Salyars says, "It kinda brings back flash backs but I wouldn't
have it any other way." While training someone in her department, Tindall died in a sudden car
crash three years ago. "She loved her job, she loved what she was doing, that helps us
get through each day because we knew she loved what she was doing." Peoria Captain Robert Baer came to remember Tindall, and others he once
served with. "I think it's important for the community and police department to
take a moment out of their day to honor their service." Like the captain, officers line up, and give a final salute to their comrades...the officers we often called on for help. |
