WMBD/WYZZ-TV - NORMAL, Ill. -- Luke Drone has been beating the odds since he left high school. So he thinks he can do it again with the Buffalo Bills.

The former Illinois State quarterback is back in central Illinois following his first 3-day rookie NFL mini-camp. He spent the weekend learning the Bills' offense with six other undrafted free agent quarterbacks.

"Learning the offense was crazy, very sophisticated" said Drone "It was overwhelming as quarterback because you have to know what everybody is doing. Learning the lingo and terminology was what I was doing pretty much all weekend."

Drone is a long shot to make any NFL roster. But he likes being the underdog.

A multi-sport athlete out of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, Drone came to ISU on a baseball scholarship. But after one disappointing season with that sport he decided to put football pads on again.

He walked on to the football team and played his way into the starting quarterback's position. He started 11 games a sophomore and was all-conference as a junior.

"It's the story of my life," said Drone of being passed over by every NFL team on draft weekend last month. "I had to walk on in college. Here I am again. But I'm ready for it and ready to go out there and compete."

Drone signed a free agent contract with the Bills the day after the NFL draft. He'll go back to Buffalo next week for month-long organized team activities with veteran players.

Drone feels like he's been given a second chance by the Bills since he had a sub-par senior year with the Redbirds. He followed up an All-Gateway Conference junior season with a senior campaign that included 18 touchdowns with 17 interceptions.

"I definitely think I have the tools and the capability to play at that level. It's just being able to apply that knowledge and do it quickly," said Drone.
