  • Income Tax Hike Plan Fails

    Thursday, Apr 10, 2008 @06:59pm CDT

A plan to hike income taxes on richer taxpayers failed in the Illinois House Thursday. The bill, sponsored by Canton representative Mike Smith would target only about 107 thousand of the state's 5 and a half million taxpayers. The constitutional amendment, which would require three-fifths majority support in the Illinois General Assembly, would hike the state income tax rate to six percent for folks making a quarter million dollars or more a year. The extra tax would be used for education , roads and tax relief for other taxpayers. Opponents claim the plan needs further debate.
