WMBD/WYZZ-TV - CHILLICOTHE, Ill. -- If you think senior Josh Parr is feeling pressure to live up to high expectations
for his IVC baseball team -- think again.

"We have fun. We're just kids playing baseball," said Parr.

The Grey Ghosts' star shortstop is signed to play college baseball at Illinois next season. But now he's focused on getting his team back to the state championship game, which his school won in 2006.

"That summer, I had a chance to be with guys who were really good," explained Parr, who was a teammate of Yankees' minor leaguer and former All-State pitcher Zach McAllister. "They knew they were going to win. It made me realize I have to think like we're always going to win."

IVC head coach Jerry Rashid has been impressed with Parr ever since he met him four years ago.

"He is a leader," said Rashid. "The work ethic he puts forth is unbelievable. If I even followed half that, I'd be a better coach."

Parr's work ethic extends beyond the baseball field. He is an honor roll student and a devout Christian, known for his discpiline.

He doesn't drink soda. Except for very special occasions.

"Two years ago I made a bet with my coach that if we made it to state, I'd drink a soda," said Parr, who was also a star on the IVC basketball team this winter. "I chugged a Mountain Dew but it didn't sit so well in my stomach."

"I guess we're going to do the same (bet) this year," laughed Parr.

Par doesn't need caffeine or carbonated beverages to get fired up. And his completely understand that about his high-energy leader.

"We're going to try and avoid the Mountain Dew," chucked Rashid. "Because that puts him over the edge."
