Reported by: Kurt Pegler - WMBD/WYZZ-TV Tuesday, Feb 12, 2008 @06:37pm CST WMBD/WYZZ-TV - BARTONVILLE -- Donovine Stewart is good at driving to the basket but he's not old enough to drive a car.
However, the Limestone freshman has plenty of people driving all over central Illinois to see his game. The 15-year-old scored 45 points at Washington last Friday and followed it up with a 32-point performance Saturday at Peoria Central. "Coming back to back like that is just keeping my performance the same," said Stewart. "I just want to do whatever it takes to win." The 6-foot guard has a two 40-point scoring games this season to go along with a slew of 30-point games. He scored 36 points in his first high school game in November and has never looked back. "I feel like my game is getting better every day," said Stewart. "I'm learning new things and being smarter (with the ball)." Fans are packing gyms to get a glimpse of Stewart's game. Illinois head coach Bruce Weber was in attendance for Saturday's game in Peoria. Despite being a freshman, Stewart has embraced the leadership role on the Rockets. "He's always played with older kids," said Limestone coach Dan Sparrow. "(Our players) look to him for his leadership and they know he's the best we have. I don't think they look at him as a freshman." Stewart doesn't necessarily look at himself as a freshman either. But he does admit he's still learning the game. "You can always learn. I learn from my teammates every day," said Stewart. "I learn from my coach, I learn from the other teams. Everyday is a learning process." And one of these days soon, he'll learn how to drive. Until then he'll worry about driving the lane. |
