Reported by: WMBD/WYZZ TV News Staff Friday, Sep 7, 2007 @11:10am CDT ![]() WMBD/WYZZ TV - A report published today by the Chicago Tribune says Illinois Congressman Jerry Weller (R-Morris) failed to disclose his real estate investments in Nicaragua during the debate to pass the Central America Free Trade Agreement. The Trib reports CAFTA significantly boosted the value of Weller's beach front properties, yet he failed to disclose those holdings during the CAFTA debates. Weller was a driving force in getting CAFTA passed in 2005. The report says while Weller was publicly pushing CAFTA, he was "privately pursuing his (Nicaraguan) land development". During that time, Weller did claim ownership of one property in Nicaragua, which contradicts Nicaraguan real estate records showing Weller bought or sold eight properties at the time. House ethics rules require representatives to disclose all property they own except for their personal residences. WMBD/WYZZ is placing calls to Weller's office for comment about the Tribune investigation. Tune in to WMBD TV tonight at 5 & 6 to see if and how Weller's office responds. |
