Reported by: Catherine Cambra - WMBD/WYZZ TV Thursday, Sep 6, 2007 @05:12pm CDT WMBD/WYZZ TV – Addressing the students, Madigan encouraged them to pay tribute to
their school's past. In a news conference a short time later, she addressed thorny issues
she's dealing with as Illinois' top prosecutor. Madigan says, “My office, as
well as a number of other entities, are investigating allegations of misconduct
in the state's attorney's office—there are other entities investigating
misconduct at the jail.” Madigan wouldn't comment specifically on the sexual harassment
accusations against Knox County state's attorney John Pepmeyer. She also didn't
have much to say about how Governor Blagojevich 's vetoes will affect her
ability to fight crime. Given the disputes in Springfield, we asked Madigan her
opinion on the bill that would give Illinois voters the power to recall
statewide elected officials. She says, “I think it's a fine idea.” Madigan also talked about identity thieves, who are claiming thousands
of Illinois victims every day. Her office has seen a spike in reports about
emails asking for personal information like social security numbers. She says,
“And certainly when you're being solicited on the internet for whatever product
or service or likely scam—do not respond. and we say that even when you get
emails for legitimate companies.” If you're victimized, or you receive
anything suspicious, she says, send it to her office. |
