WMBD/WYZZ-TV—BLOOMINGTON--Spanish is making airwaves in Bloomington-Normal and local students are making history because of it.

Reggaeton from La Factoria streams to listeners from WESN thanks to Illinois Wesleyan University senior Marita Calderon and sophomore Jocelyn Martinez.

Calderon and Martinez host the hour-long show called "Radio Latino", which aside from music provides talk, news, and advice from local Hispanic community leaders.

Both hosts say the show is exactly what the twin cities have needed on the radio dial.

“We're helping out a lot of people or even just reaching out to the community getting them something to feel comfort because they're hearing their native language or the music that they never hear,” said Martinez.

Univision is on TV, but that's not local, so something local is what people are really excited about,” smiled Calderon.

While show is broadcast primarily in Spanish, leaders in Bloomington’s growing Latino community say the program isn't only for one audience.

Hispanic Families Work Group Chair, Alex Cardona said, “ESL teachers are listening in, non-Hispanic Spanish teachers are listening in, [and] non-Hispanic Spanish speakers.”

“It's my mom, it's my husband it's people from all places in the town... that community now feels that they're valued and they're important, and there's a resource here every week, Wednesdays to tune into,” nodded Illinois Wesleyan University Admissions Counselor Nancy Vasquez.

“We're pretty much making history in Bloomington because this is the first time this has been done,” said Martinez.

Which just might have Radio Latino sticking to the switchboards for a long time.

“This is something that could last forever in this community...it's groundbreaking, it's exciting,” giggled Calderon.

If you'd like to catch Radio Latino, but you don't live in the twin cities you can still go to www.wesn.org to listen to its live webcast every Wednesday, from noon to 1 p.m.
