WMBD/WYZZ— Bloomington— Illinois Wesleyan is setting the bar when it comes to "going green." IWU’s Welcome Center is the only building in Bloomington built by Leadership and Energy Efficient Design, or “LEED,” standards. To become a "LEED" building, you have to earn enough points, and IWU’S Welcome Center earned big points for its geothermal system. The welcome center earned other "LEED" points from using recycled carpet and purchasing bricks within a five-mile radius to keep trucks from polluting the air. To keep more cars off of the roads, they installed a shower to encourage workers to jog, walk, or ride their bike to work. The career center and the admissions office are moving into the new welcome center this week. Wesleyan officials say they eventually want all of their buildings “LEED” certified.
