  • City Council to Vote on $425 Million Renovation
Reported by: Lori Obert - WMBD/WYZZ

WMBD/WYZZ - PEORIA -- Methodist medical center could soon see a $425 million renovation.  The Peoria City Council will vote tomorrow night on whether to approve the project.

“You've got someone who wants to pump $425 million into our economy, into the City of Peoria, it's great,” City Councilman Eric Turner said.  While everyone seems to agree the investment is great news for Peoria.  There's one piece of the project that's raising some concerns.

“We don't understand why they have to rip up the boulevard.  It's a historic street," Les Kenyon said.  The renovation could mean narrowing parts of Hamilton Boulevard from four to two lanes.  And historic preservation isn't the only concern.

City Councilman Gary Sandberg says narrowing Hamilton could cause congestion.  But overall residents of the Randolph-Roanoke neighborhood where Methodist is located say they welcome the changes.

“We think what they're doing is reasonable.  They're actually pitching in some sewer work and things for the city so it seems like overall a win-win situation for us,” Tim Vega said.
